Keyword Research

Do your keyword research to maximize your SEO efforts!

Keyword research often times gets overlooked when people talk about SEO.  Everyone wants to build their links, build their content, drive traffic and make sales.  So do we, but without a solid foundation, your success is going to be limited.  A solid foundation will allow you to construct your campaign properly.  Even if you already have a site built, revisiting your keywords will allow you to go back and fine tune your site and SEO campaign, allowing you to maximize your efforts.

The first thing you need to do is brainstorm.  Type in a word doc a list of keywords and keyword phrases.  Go ahead and put together as large of a list as you would like.  For this example, we are going to use only two keywords, “search engine optimization” and “SEO”.  You should create a much larger list, however, for the best results.

Now we will use an excellent keyword research tool to explore how to choose good keywords.  This is a free tool that is great and part of Google Adwords.  It is the keyword tool, if you have not used it, you are missing out.  Search for “Google keyword tool” if you are not signed up for Adwords.  If you do use Adwords, you can find it under the “opportunities” tab.  It is an excellent tool, and it is free.

Take your keyword list and paste it in the box marked “get keyword ideas”.  The tool will take a few seconds while it is thinking, then it will generate a large list of keyword suggestions for you.  Once it has created this large list, you want to choose “exact” under the match types (we have a red arrow pointing there for you to see).  This ensures that you are matching the exact phrases, as opposed to broad.  The difference here is that in a broad match, if someone were to type in “best SEO” for example, it would be a broad match for “SEO” since it contains that keyword.  We don’t want to have our numbers influenced in this manner, we only want the data for our exact keywords.

Once you have done that, you can search by competition and by search volume to come up with some keyword ideas.  The trick here is finding keywords appropriate to your site that have a high search volume, but low competition.  Now, don’t get me wrong, you can compete and rank for higher competition keywords, it will just take more time and more effort to rank highly for them.  Even if you do target the high competition keywords, this exercise is still a good thing to do from time to time as it will uncover more keywords that you can target.

You can export this list and save it for future reference.  An additional way to turn up more keywords is to use the URL function of the tool.  If you delete the keywords in the keyword box, and enter your URL in the website box and run the tool, you will get another list of keywords based on content on your site.  This is another great way to find good keywords, as Google is making these suggestions based on your site.

Another way to make your keyword research work payoff is by fine tuning your site.  Every time you add content, you should be doing your keyword research.  Internal pages can target long tail keywords, and doing research in this manner will likely turn up some great keyword ideas that you may not have thought of.

This is really the base of your SEO campaign, as everything else you are going to do will be using these keywords.  If you don’t spend the time to do your keyword research and choose your keywords properly, your long term SEO performance will suffer.  I suggest revisiting your keywords often, and adjusting your SEO campaigns to take advantage of new keyword ideas you come up with.
